For those who have messaged me and asked about the science, here are the studies I mentioned in the episode:

🧪 Red algae + HIV

Researchers found that a compound called Griffithsin, extracted from red algae off Hawaii, can block HIV entry into cells.

🦠 Deep-sea antibiotics from Norway

Scientists exploring Arctic waters near Svalbard discovered marine bacteria producing compounds that can fight drug-resistant infections.

🌊 BlueHealth & wellbeing

Spending just two hours a week near water significantly improves mental health, sleep, and life satisfaction.

The ocean has this effect on me in a very mighty way. When the waves crash over me and my skin tingles like I’m being cleansed in a gigantic washing machine. There’s nothing like this phenomenon on earth. My body is miraculously refreshed and my mind is also from spending time in and near the ocean. Somehow lakes, streams, rivers, and creeks though beautiful do not generate the same feeling with me. There’s something about the waves crashing, and the sea spray in the air, the entire experience is spiritual for me. Unfortunately I don’t live near the ocean anymore and have to plan and have the time to go there. I live in Phoenix Arizona so not far from California beaches. My body has been telling me that I am long overdue for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation in the sea. Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece about the healing properties of the ocean, Luke.

Thank you first, for the reminder of the healing power of water. And for referencing the studies below - sending your piece and the Blue Health article to my mom to encourage her and dad to spend more time near the ocean. Also, knowing that you are waking up at 3am to tend to your son makes your writing and podcasting even more impressive. Thank you.
