I loved reading this, even though I found myself sobbing - some evocative writing! As someone who had the privilege to teach about the conservation of our planet's resources (i.e. global conservation biology is about maintaining food supply for humans, after all), we mostly only talk about the massive tragedies we have visited upon our cousins in this blue biosphere, especially in the oceans of this rocky planet, and I am truly grateful that you wrote such a beautiful piece about someone who absolutely deserves our collective admiration and appreciation. Absolutely brilliant.
I’m really glad you took the time to write this, I tried my best to paint the picture of her life in a couple thousand words. She was an incredible human.
Thank you for bringing this person alive again. Why has NZ not ratified the treaty? Why are we still bottom trawling? Why wouldn’t we ratify the treaty? I don’t understand.
Thank you for writing so eloquently about Kristina, a dear colleague and friend, so that others may know of her profoundly important work and selfless dedication to improving the planet for all. She was and will continue to be an inspiration for legions of ocean champions.
Inspiring read… as an informal educator reading this inspired me to put an activity together for youth to read about these heros and what they did without fanfare but with deep care, forethought and collaboration.
Beautifully written, Luke. And it is precisely the sort of intentional story that leaves the reader with a sense of agency rather than despair.
Thank you for celebrating this extraordinary woman. What an inspiring story!
Thank you, Mr. McMillan. Ms. Gjerde is a heroine we need for more than just her work on preservation of the oceans.

Profit. Then because later many countries will be mining the seabed. And then void the treaty.

Thank you for this. I just hope I did her proud.
What an inspiring, amazing and tenacious person! Thank you for sharing.
Wow….

That’s great to hear! Please do let me know how it goes!
Incredible story about someone I had never heard about until after she had died.
What an amazing woman. We had no idea who she was until this article. Well done, Luke!
Great tribute. Would love to learn how impactful the law is once it goes into effect
Time spent with Kristina was never time wasted x
Thanks for this. Elegance. Openness. Determination. Imagination. And a smile. Will repost.
