Good morning!
Something extraordinary just happened.
There will be no whale hunting in Iceland this summer.
Not for fin whales.
Not for minkes.
Not at all.
The only remaining licensed minke whaler in Iceland has put his vessel up for sale. You can view the listing here. Here’s the kicker… the hunting licence doesn’t come with the boat. It’s non-transferable. That means any new owner would need to apply for a fresh licence and the process takes weeks, if not months. As of today, no application has been filed.
Pair this with the already-confirmed cancellation of the fin whale hunt, and the picture is clear:
There will be no whale hunts in Iceland this summer.
This is a massive moment.
A rare pause in an otherwise relentless annual killing season and a hard-earned win for every organisation, activist, policymaker, and supporter who spoke out.
It’s tempting to say the fight is over. It’s not. But for now, the harpoons are staying down.
The details are still unfolding, but one thing’s certain, your voice helped make this possible.
(And yes… before you ask, I did briefly consider crowdfunding to buy the boat ourselves and scrapping it.)
Stay tuned for more updates.
